Busting open politics

by Chris | 11 Jun 2009 | No Comments

Richard Harrington is pledging that upon being elected, he will introduce monthly public meetings for constituents. It will be a chance for the people of the constituency to hold him to account and pave the way for a more open democratic process in Watford.

Richard Harrington is pledging that, if elected, he will introduce monthly public meetings for constituents at various locations throughout Watford and Three Rivers. In these sessions Richard will report to constituents what he has done in the last month, explain any expenses, open the floor to any questions and set any goals arising from issues discussed at the meeting.

It will be a chance for the people of the constituency to meet him and ask any questions regarding issues that are of concern to them. Richard says that it is right that he will be held to be publically accountable and these meetings will provide an arena for public debate on the matters affecting Watford. There will be no restrictions on what can be discussed and Richard hopes that these meetings will bring greater transparency to MPs proceedings and will give local people a chance to have their voices listened to.

Harrington said,

“I want to hold open meetings every month. People have a right to question the actions of their MP. Westminster has become a village closed off to the rest of the country and I want to bust open people’s access to the political process. By holding these meetings, people will be able to tell me what I am doing wrong and also give me a chance to explain what we are doing right.”

He went on to say,

“This sort of forum will also give people the chance to pass on their ideas on how to govern the country better. This way, I hope Watford will have a louder and wiser voice in Parliament.”
